If I Could Practice It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over Yous is the 2nd album by Canterbury scene band Caravan, released in September 1970. It was the predecessor to their best-known anthology In the Land of Grey and Pinkish (1971). The album is representative of the Canterbury scene genre, featuring representative organ solos and melodic vocals typical of the ring'due south style. The anthology was released on Decca Records, every bit was the championship rails as a single release.
Groundwork [edit]
Caravan had released their debut album, Caravan in 1968, achieving some live success and had appeared on Great britain and German language tv set in early 1969. Unfortunately, their label, Verve Records shut downwardly their British operations and dropped the band. Guitarist Pye Hastings later on recalled "that situation actually left u.s. in limbo".[ane] The band regrouped and continued performing alive, eventually finding a director Terry Male monarch. David Hitchcock, an employee of Decca Records' art section, saw the band perform at the London Lyceum and recommend that his boss, Hugh Mendl sign them.[2]
Sessions for the album started at Tangerine Studios on Balls Swimming Road, Dalston, London in September 1969, with the band cocky-producing and Robin Sylvester applied science. Hastings recalled that this acquired problems, as every member of the band wanted his instrument to be louder than the others. The band recorded a few tracks, but these were abandoned while the band went out on tour, having become popular on the university excursion in Britain and Europe.[3] They regrouped in February the following year[four] and recorded the songs on the album generally alive onto eight-runway tape. The highlight of the sessions was a fourteen-infinitesimal jazz-rock slice assembled from various sections contributed by the band, called "For Richard".[v] Keyboardist David Sinclair equanimous the basic structure, while bassist Richard Sinclair wrote the chief melody. Hastings invited his brother Jimmy to guest on saxophone and flute, which would become a regular feature of Caravan's studio work.[6]
The album title and championship track is a quote oftentimes attributed to Spike Milligan but every bit possibly deriving from a bootlegged Bob Dylan vocal "All Over You" ("Well, if I had to do information technology all over again/Babe, I'd do it all over y'all"), afterward released on The Homemade Series, Vol 9: The Witmark Demos: 1962-1964.

"Hello Hi", backed with the title track, was released as a single in Baronial 1970, which led to an appearance on the BBC's Peak of the Pops.[7] The anthology was released the following calendar month in the Britain, and in March 1971 in the US.[8] According to AllMusic, "If I Could Practise It All Again contains pregnant progressions over the kickoff album."[7]
"For Richard" became a staple of alive Caravan shows and was typically heard as the set closer.[5] A fully orchestrated, live version can be heard on the 1974 release Caravan and the New Symphonia.
The CD was remastered in 2001, with the add-on of bonus tracks, including the abandoned September 1969 sessions, and the out-take "A Day in the Life of Maurice Haylett", written about the band'southward route manager.[9]
